The Weakley County Health Department marked the completion of renovations to its Dresden facility Thursday, Aug. 27, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that brought together local and state officials, health leaders and community members.
The renovation completion celebration was held at the department’s 9852 Highway 22 location and highlighted both the improvements to the facility and the wide range of public health services provided to Weakley County residents.
Weakley County Health Department Director Michael LaChapelle opened the program and welcomed those in attendance before introducing Weakley County Mayor Dale Hutcherson and other government officials. Representatives from TLM Engineers, Architects and Planners were also scheduled to provide an overview of the renovation project, including its scope, benefits and anticipated impact on the community.
Regional Director Shelley Hayes followed with remarks recognizing those who supported the project and introduced Dr. John Dunn for the keynote address. Dunn’s remarks focused on the importance of the project, the funding awarded for the improvements and the individuals and organizations involved in bringing the renovation to completion.
Following the program, those in attendance gathered outside for the ceremonial ribbon cutting and photographs before returning for closing remarks and an opportunity to tour, visit and learn more about the department.
The celebration was held in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Health, Weakley County and the Weakley County Chamber of Commerce.
The renovation represents an investment in a facility that serves as one of the county’s primary points of access for preventive care, public health programs and health education.
The Weakley County Health Department’s mission is to promote, protect and improve the health of people living in, working in or visiting Tennessee. County health departments serve a particularly important role in rural communities, where residents may rely on them for services ranging from routine preventive care to specialized state health programs.
Services available through the Weakley County Health Department include child health services, immunizations, primary care, family planning, sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, tuberculosis control, nutrition services and the Women, Infants and Children program, commonly known as WIC.
The department also provides or coordinates Children’s Special Services, prenatal services, Help Us Grow home visits, vital records, health education, environmental health programs, voter registration assistance and TennCare outreach.
Environmental health responsibilities include inspections of food service establishments, hotels and motels, public swimming pools, child care facilities, schools, correctional facilities and other regulated establishments. Staff also assist with rabies vaccination programs and animal bite investigations.
For families with young children, the department provides well-child examinations, screenings and immunizations, while WIC offers nutrition assistance and breastfeeding support to eligible pregnant and breastfeeding women and children younger than 5.
The renovated facility continues to serve residents from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 9852 Highway 22 in Dresden. The Weakley County Health Department can be reached at 731-364-2210.
